The Bavarian GtL 4/4 was first put into service in 1911. With a few changes, it was built until 1927. The locomotives proved to be very good in operation and, with an output of 450 hp, were the most powerful Bavarian local railway locomotives. A total of 117 locomotives were produced. Almost all railway depots in Bavaria that served branch lines had GtL 4/4 in their fleet.
