After the end of World War II, there were 386 machines of the 86 series on West German territory. Most could be repaired, so that the DB had 378 locomotives of this series in 1952. In addition to the classic branch line trains, the area of responsibility also regularly included the transport of express trains and shunting in freight yards. The last machines retired from operational service at the DB in 1974, designated as the 086 series.
