The two-cylinder locomotives of the Class 01 are considered the first express train locomotives built according to the standard construction program. The first batches were equipped with 800 mm diameter leading wheels and were approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102 onwards, 1,000 mm leading wheels and reinforced brakes were used, which increased the permitted top speed to 130 km/h. The heyday of the Class 01 began with the 1934 summer timetable. The performance achieved in those years was a challenge for both the engines and the crew. After the Second World War, such performance was only achieved again by electric locomotives and large diesel locomotives. Henschel delivered locomotive 01 200 to the Hof depot in 1937 and was also used on the inclined plane for express and fast trains between Bamberg and Hof.
