The Class 86 was designed as a 1’D1′ standard tender locomotive by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) and built in large numbers starting in 1928. 244 locomotives remained in the area of what would later become East Germany, of which 71 had to be transferred to the Soviet Union. At the beginning of the 1950s, the DRG had 164 locomotives at its disposal. These locomotives were used primarily on the lines in the Harz foothills, the Ore Mountains, and Upper Lusatia.
