The steam locomotives, known as Jumbo because of their pulling power, were used with great success in almost all of Germany and in many other European countries. The maximum forward speed was 80 km/h and the reverse speed was 50 km/h. Some of these already very powerful machines achieved a further increase in performance to 2,100 hp (1,546 kW) on the German Federal Railroad when they were converted to oil firing in 1955. From 1968 onwards, the DB’s oil-fired locomotives had the series designation 043.
