The two-cylinder engines of the 01 series are considered to be the first express train locomotives built according to the standard construction program. The first batches were equipped with leading wheels of 800 mm diameter and approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102, leading wheels of 1,000 mm and reinforced brakes were used, which increased the maximum permitted speed to 130 km/h. The DR retained the original design with the large Wagner smoke deflectors and the air and feed pumps in the smoke chamber niches after the Second World War.
After the war, the locomotive 01 226 remained with the Railway Company of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Reichsbahn). After switching to the computerized numbering plan, the machine was renumbered 01 2226-7 and remained in service until 1973.
